WHAT TO WEAR

Styling is one of the most important things you can do to have beautiful and timeless images. Even though I want you guys to still be you, here are some styling pointers:

For a more stylized shoot, Think layers. Probably the biggest difference between sessions that look great and sessions that look wow: little boys in a t-shirt, with a button up over it, along with a blazer. Throw on a fun hat and you're set! Little girls: same thing, leggings, fun skirt, tank with a sweater and fun boots or shoes.

For a more lifestyle shoot, maybe just let the kiddos pick their favorite outfit and let them pair a tutu with boots, or your son may just love his pj bottoms and favorite super hero cape. It is important they you are comfortable and in clothing that is something you would wear every day. it needs to be real. These choices would not be appropriate for a family photo however... but more lifestyle.

As you think about your color palette, imagine your family being one complete piece of artwork. Each person/outfit will bring together a feeling of unity and coordination. Instead of everyone wearing the same shade - think about what accent colors might look nice with your color palette. A mix of solids and small prints, layers and accessories can pull all of your outfits together. It is important that everyone is in a similar tone. You don’t want someone in really dark tones and others in light as the eye would bounce around and not rest on your faces.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR

Remember the “go to” look of everyone in khakis & white button down shirts? That isn’t the kind of matching I’d like you to do. My do not wear list includes large contrasting patterns such as stripes or wild florals, bright flourescent colors, large logos on tshirts, big flower headbands, large watches, and worn out shoes. anything that is distrating to your faces is a no-no. Simplicity is key.

For families, please do not come with someone in black, someone in white, someone in a bright color, and someone in stripes. It will look very uncoordinated and messy. It is SO important that everyone be in a similar tone.

Please take time to find the right clothes. helpful tips think about the colors in the room where you will display the portrait and design your clothing choices around your room. is it soft & natural or bright and colorful? it is important to dress for your art. dress from head to toe. Don’t forget about your feet!
